Many games succeed in creating a fluid combat system, and while it can be challenging, a game like Dark Souls 3 still “feels” good. However, it all feels so unbearably clunky. Similarly to the Dark Souls series, you’ll have to keep a good eye on your stamina bar, as each attack or dodge will drain it by a certain amount, while not fighting will regenerate it.

It is a clunky, frustrating mess, just like it was in the first Elex. Less immersive however is Elex II’s combat. Elex II is no graphical masterpiece but at least the scenery looks great and immersive. This jetpack can be upgraded and evenually even be used to soar large distances across the skies and enjoy the view.

The major upgrade over the previous game is the addition of a highly functional jetpack, which allows you to reach greater hights easily or drop from great heights without fear of falling to your doom. At one point I was very confused about a certain character’s look, as other characters were referring to her as an “old woman”, however she looked about the same age as all he other characters out there. But the facial expressions of the character feel very out of place, with many faces looking similar to others. This has been done with great attention to detail. However, character design leaves a lot to be desired, and I’m not talking about how each faction looks. The world of Magalan looks great, with a large variety in the flora and fauna, with lush forests and green pastures and waterfalls flowing into rivers, snow-capped mountains and sandy deserts with architectural remnants of a lost age. I never imagined a game could visually look good and bad at the same time, but Piranha Bytes somehow managed to do this. For me this provided a nice mix of being responsible, and just rummaging around for some loot or some interesting locations. There are only so many times you can convince me to run back and forth across the map, but at least the option to just not care about any quests and just explore the map for a while is there. While the many side-quests give you the impression that there is always something to do, they often feel very repetitive and boring, and perhaps even meaningless. Running from one end of the Berserker camp to the other to deliver and item, to then having to run back to your original location to report that you have delivered said item sucessfully is just a bit too realistic perhaps. But Elex II suffers from this by trying to be a bit too ambitious perhaps, and while the main story is certainly intriguing enough, the game often sends you on menial errands through the many side-quests. Piranha Bytes is certainly ambitious and their effort is very commendable. This often results in games that are underperforming on several levels, and Elex II is no exception here. However, unlike those big-money studios, Piranha Bytes remains a smaller player and their games are often described as “Eurojank” games, referring to the European location of the developer and their attempts to create an ambitious and large open-world adventure on a limited budget.

Similarly to open-world games such as Fallout or the Elder Scrolls series or other greats suchs as later Assassin’s Creed or Grand Theft Auto games, no one is forcing or rushing you towards the end objective. The large open world map is meant to be explored, and you’ll run into a variety of enemies and allies as you travel from the lush green forests surrounding the Berserker’s camp to the derelict ruins nearby the Clerics encampment or the snowy mountains that the Albs call their home. Right from the start you can set out to explore the world as you please, and decide whether you want to be a “good” or a “bad” guy.

The game’s five factions - the Berserkes, the Morkons, the Albs, the Outlaws and the Clerics - each have their own agenda and view on the world, and the game encourages you to visit each factions before deciding whether you want to join any at all. Even though the main missions drive you toward an eventual end point, there are many different ways to go about it.

This is where the game really shines: the amount of freedom you get to do as you please. Just like in the first game you can join one of the factions and grow in their ranks, or decide to not join any at all. However, since the factions barely see eye-to-eye with each other, this won’t be an easy task for Jax. Off course, you can’t be expected to do this all by yourself, and the game’s main mission points you in the right direction: unite all the factions to form a unified front against the invaders. This time he will have to defend the planet from alien invaders, known as Skyands. After saving the planet of Magalan after it had been wrecked by a meteor with the surviving people separating themselves into several factions, it is up to Jax to save the world again. Elex II takes off where Elex ended, with Jax saving the world from the big bad evil known as the “Hybrid”.
